A Resort in Portugal

We are currently planning a private resort located in Portugal for a Dutch client. The setting is a rugged landscape with olive trees and old stone walls overlooking the distant ocean. In our design the landscape is as fundamental as the building, incorporating the existing terraced fields and different levels.

The architecture is one of a restrained poetic rationalism with clear-cut abstract forms and planes and materials in response to light. For us houses do not just speak about the materials from which they are made, but about the intangible rhythms, spirits and dreams of peoples’ lives. The spatial concept enables the identification of each room as a shelter in the surrounding landscape. Moving through the interior space, enclosing walls and distant views alternately creates a sense of place, a vital sensory choreography of “insides” and “outsides”.
